Battletech is heating up in Santa Maria & San Luis Obispo
Last Monday at Gordon’s Good Games and Thursday at On the Play Gaming was a success! Players gathered to pit their mech’s against each other in brutal strategic combat with each player having to stay a few steps ahead of their opponent at every turn. Commander Cameron versus MechCommander Courtney from West Coast Irregulars battled hard throughout the night. Quoting from Cameron’s weekly “Battletech Mania” Thursday night recap on the Central Coast Games Discord to describe the evening, “each side [eyed] each other suspiciously with malicious intent and fascination of the Ultraviolence and ugliness that is about to ensue!” While MechCommander Courtney’s purple Sagittaire took a “combined arms fire from six different mechs [belonging to Commander Cameron]… and was stripped down of all of its armor. In return MechCommander Courtney's three big bad Juggernaut Mechs, as well as a Wraith, focused fire on [Cameron’s] Battle Master … finally Courtney wins initiative in the 4th round after being left in the dust for the last three.” The battle raged on and in the end MechCommander Courtney was declared the winner by complete kill of the battle master.

After the battle’s were finished Courtney and Cameron from West Coast Irregulars sat down Central Coast Games for an interview about their experience playing battle tech, the community building around West Coast Irregulars and the future of Battletech as a whole.
CCG: How long have you been playing Battle tech and how long have you been playing within the central coast?
Courtney: I’ve been playing battle tech for as long as I can remember but I’ve been playing on the central coast for almost two years now after recently moving from the Las Vegas Battletech community.
CCG: What’s the difference between the Battletech following here vs over in Las Vegas?
Courtney: Vegas has a very large following with a host of tournaments and events circulating every month. There is a lot of Battletech interest over here on the central coast but there is not enough community infrastructure to plan and host the same number of opportunities. That’s what we’re hoping to change with West Coast Irregulars.
CCG: For those who don’t know, can you tell us about West Coast Irregulars and their involvement with the local Battletech community.
Courtney: West Coast Irregulars is a Battle tech community outreach organization that I created with a few of my friends. Every Monday at Gordon's good games, and Thursdays at we host an “open table” gaming event where new and veteran players from anywhere in the local area or on the central coast can come and play Battletech with each other. I love to teach and meet new members of this amazing game that is becoming re-popularized because, in my opinion, due to the accessibility and use of an agnostic miniature system.
CCG: To expand on the subject, what about Battletech makes it popular for both new and veteran players? And what is an “agnostic miniature” system?
Courtney: The agnostic miniature system allows for any miniature to represent any mech and their stats as opposed to other miniature systems where a unit can only be represented by specific official miniatures. However in Battletech a $5 mech could represent a very powerful unit without the need for additional costs from the players. For new players this makes the initial investment to begin playing far less than most other Tabletop Miniature Wargames. A starter box of basic mech’s is $25 for a 4 pack of highly detailed pre-assembled miniatures and can be used right out of the box to begin playing! Both Gordon’s and “On the Play” gaming stores have Battletech kits available during our weekly meetups.
CCG: Are there any beginner specific events for interested newcomers?
Courtney: West Coast Irregulars in addition to the weekly games host a monthly “play and take” event on the last Sunday of every month. It's a 10 dollar buy in and you get a free mech to learn and playtest the “Battletech Grinder” which is a fast paced version for new players designed by Catalyst Games. At the end of the event you get to take the battlemech home and add them to your set. At the weekly games we have pick up games and we play the “grinder rules” during the monthly. We like to keep it very open for new and veteran community members.
CCG: Do you plan on bringing more Battletech to MimicCon 2024?
Courtney: Oh I am very excited! Last year had a lot of turn out for Battletech and the results were amazing with tables featuring beautifully crafted terrain and a large variety of painted mech’s. West Coast Irregulars is putting everything we’ve got to make next year’s Battletech section at MimicCon 2024 better than ever.
If you are interested in learning more about Battletech or want to join the central coast community check out the Central Coast Gaming Discord channel to connect with local community members such as Courtney from West Coast Irregulars. Follow this newsletter for more community news and alerts on future events like Battletech Mondays/Thursdays with other community members. In the meantime go to Gordon’s Good Games in Atascadero and On the Play Gaming in Santa Maria to pick yourself up a box of mech’s to start playing with the Central Coast Gaming Community today.
